Neve Campbell's Biography

Background:

Neve Adrianne Campbell was born October 3rd, 1973, in Guelph, Toronto, Canada. Her mom, Marnie Campbell, got the name "Neve," from her maiden name. Her father, Gerry Campbell a drama teacher originally from Glasgow, Scotland, and her mother was Marnie Neve, a psychologist originally from Amsterdam in Holland who now runs a yoga studio. They were both affiliated with the theater world. Her parents divorced while she was still a baby (2 years [Image] old) and she moved to Toronto with her father where she grew up.

She has an 18 month older brother Christian Campbell and two younger halfbrothers: Damian McDonald and Alex McDonald (youngest). Her brother Christian is also an actor who starred in the short-lived Spelling-series "Malibo Shores". The mispronunciation of her name often irritates her. People pronounce it "Neevey," "Neeve," "Nevy," but they never get it right! Hell if someone kept saying my name wrong I'd get agitated too. So I can't blame her there. She started dancing at age 6 following a visit with her father to see "The Nutcracker" and at age 9 she got a full scolarship and began training at the National Ballet School of Canada. She has been trained in 6 different variaties of dance, including jazz, flamenco, modern, hiphop and classical ballet. She performed in "Sleeping Beauty" and "The Nutcracker" with the National Ballet of Canada.

Neve married Jeff Colf for 2 and a half years. On July 30, 1997, they announced their separation, and Jeff moved out. In October 1997 she officially requested a divorce from Jeff. On November 6 he filed to finalize the divorce.

Neve moved to Los Angeles, California to quote "I wanted to go out there and throw my name around and see what happens," Campbell says, and, of that, she landed her role on FOX's Party of Five as Julia Salinger, a TV drama about five children who are surviving on their own without their parents in which of whom were killed in a car accident. Then, Neve got her big movie role as Bonnie in The Craft, and later got roles in Scream and Scream 2. Both were box office hit surprises that boosted Neve's career, and now she's crowned as a "Scream Queen."

At 14, while Neve was dealing with her nervous breakdown, she explained to the Ballet school it was because of the highly stressful conditions at the school.

Amy Lippman, "Party of Five" writer on Neve: "The way she's grown as an actress has astonished me. She's incredibly versatile, incredibly composed. She's not flighty. There's a lovely calm to her."

Some Great References:

Neve's older brother Christian on Neve's vulnerability and it's concern with her popularity; " I remember when I realized how important it was for Neve to be on stage. [Their father, Gerry, made a role for Christian in a play he was directing] I came into the living room all dressed up in my little costume. Neve broke into tears because she felt so left out. People want to wrap her up and take care of her. Maybe that's what an audience feels when they watch Neve -- her vulnerability."

Christian Campbell knows when Neve is pissed off; "You always knew when she was pissed off--this sullen darkness would come over her face. She wouldn't complain, but you knew she was upset."

Wes Craven on Neve's talent; "She's got great sensitivity. She's very, very professional. I can't recall anybody who seems so able to stay in the pocket emotionally throughout the day."

Peter Roth, President of Fox TV, on Neve's character; "Neve is magic, pure magic. She's beautiful, she's accessible, she has a quality people can relate to, that they can embrace and feel for."

An unknown interviewer on Neve's character; "She erupts in tremulous laughter. Whenever a tough subject arises, Campbell giggles as if in an attempt to render it harmless. That little girl has grown into a fascinating study of contrasts, marked by both success and insecurity."

Courtney Cox on co-star Neve's part in 'Scream' "She had an extremely hard part in this movie, ["Scream"], to be on the verge of fright and tears throughout, and to keep it so interesting and real at the same time. She could do it because she's grounded. She's a centered human being."
